Dell MD3060e enclosure

Dell has announced a new expansion enclosure for its PowerEdge servers capable of fitting up to 60 hard drives in a 4U frame. The high density enclosure can ultimately be used to deliver over a petabyte of data while taking up less than half a standard rack of space in the datacentre.

The MD3060e dense enclosure, which is effectively just a box for extra storage that connects to a PowerEdge server, brings affordable density to the PowerEdge R620, R720 and R720xd server lines, the firm said.

"Can 'more is best' really be said for everything? Maybe not, but when we can pack a lot of storage disks into a small amount of space, I think it can be said of our most recent Dell Storage product, the MD3060e dense enclosure," said Dell marketing manager Judy Benson, writing on the firm's Dell4Enterprise blog.

The 4U enclosure holds up to 60 2.5in or 3.5in SAS or solid state disk (SSD) drives, and is modular, so that customers can scale up to a maximum of four enclosures connected to a single server as their capacity needs grow. With 4TB SAS drives, this configuration would fit over a petabyte of storage space into half a standard rack, according to Dell.

The MD3060e supports 6Gbps SAS connectivity with a host bus adaptor (HBA), so that administrators can easily manage data through the host server and scale to meet data centre application demands without disruption.
